Assistantship with the Rhode Island Children's Chorus
for High School Students in grades 10-12

Application Deadline: Saturday, July 11

08-09 assistants
2007-2008 Assistants

WHAT:  Each year several talented high school singers with leadership abilities are selected to serve as mentors and assist with all choral activities for the Rhode Island Children’s Chorus (RICC), a select ensemble that has performed with the Providence Singers, the RI Philharmonic, the Boston University Choruses, at the 2009 Music Educators' National Conference (MENC) Convention, and at other prestigious events.  This is a volunteer position that has enabled many past assistants to receive college scholarships and earn acceptance into the National Honor Society.  For those students who need to do community service work with the children’s chorus will satisfy this requirement.

WHEN: Beginning in late August, the RICC rehearses once a week.  Assistants are able to choose among the times and locations that work best with their schedules.   The Harrisville choruses rehearse for two hours each on Sunday afternoons.  We also have two choruses that meet for 90 minutes each on Tuesday evenings in East Providence at the RI Philharmonic Music School.  Assistants are not expected to attend rehearsals in both locations, but rather at the venue that is closest to their homes.

WHO:  Talented female singers in grades 10-12 with an interest in music and children (because the
RICC is a treble chorus, only sopranos and altos are needed at this time).  Preference will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in music education. (Please note: graduates of the RI Children's Chorus will need to apply).

BENEFITS:  The RICC assistants will receive all of their music and their concert shirts free of charge.
They will not be responsible for paying any membership tuition.  They will need to make a
one-time purchase of a concert dress, which is approximately $50.   The assistants will have the
opportunity to expand their vocal range and improve vocal technique, will be exposed to
a wide variety of music, will perform in prestigious events, and, most importantly, will gain experience serving
as role models for young children.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  Please fill out the attached application and email it to the address below.
The conductor, Ms. Noel will call to set up a short (and painless) interview. We hope you will consider this wonderful opportunity.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Please note: all assistants who are selected will need to attend a mandatory meeting in August. (Date TBA)
