About the Chorus
The Rhode Island Children’s Chorus is an incorporated, non-profit organization, which was founded in 2003 by Christine Noel, its Artistic Director. An Executive Director, Assistant Conductor, Board Members and Staff aid in the administrative and teaching duties of the chorus. Based in northern Rhode Island, choral members include children from over 20 cities and towns in Rhode Island and neighboring Massachusetts. From its beginnings with 14 singers, the chorus has grown to over 80 current members and is composed of three choirs. The Children’s Chorus hosts two major concerts a year, where all three groups perform both separately and jointly. In addition the combined group appears at many local and regional invitational events. The RI Children’s Chorus has sung with the RI Philharmonic Orchestra in Carmina Burana, with the prestigious Providence Singers for a newly-commissioned piece by Julian Wachner of Montreal, and with the choruses of Boston University and Rhode Island College. In addition, the chorus has won first place in their division at the Music in the Parks choral competition for the past 4 years.
All choruses are under the direction of artistic director Christine Noel, MM, conductor Richard Sylvia, and student assistants. The mission of the chorus is to provide children with musical instruction and performance opportunities at the highest possible level. At RICC, children develop musical ability, vocal skills and performance readiness in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. Natural talent emerges and confidence grows as the child masters a repertoire that includes classical, contemporary, international, and patriotic choral music. Strong bonds of friendship become a part of the child’s choral experience when they participate in this rewarding artistic activity.
